Traveling Winers Weekend Wine Picks

Faces-TomJoeTom Joe
“Hops ‘r Better” Winer

Wine: 2011 Cabernet Franc
Type: Red
Vineyard: Danza Del Sol Winery

Buy local

It’s not often I rate wines over 90 in Quini, but’s here’s a 93 wine! Intense appearance, with intense aromas. A full-bodied red. The finish is complex. An overall excellent cabernet franc from the USA.
“This is the Life” Winer

Wine: Bodegas Breca Garnacha de Fuego 2013
Type: Red, Dry
Vineyard: Bodega Breca Winery (Spain)

Buy local or find it at

Now here’s a beauty.  Lovely bright purple color with hints of darkness (Hmm.). The flavors are of dark berries, cherry coupled with a touch of smokiness on the nose and in the mouth. The red fruit and smoke qualities carry through to a sweet, gently tannic finish.

The “Timeless” Winer

Wine: Beringer Red Moscato
Type: Sweet, red
Vineyard: Beringer Vineyards (California)

Buy local or find it at

Not a fan of sweet red wine, I have to tell you right off the bat. I decided to try this because, well I don’t know.  It was a pleasant surprise to discover that while sweet it was not the nasty, cloying sweetness I was expecting.  We had it with some wicked hot Thai food and it matched up almost perfectly.  I’d have it again but I’m still a dry red kind of guy though apparently I can be led astray.

The “Hippy” Winer

Wine: Frog’s Leap Zinfandel (375ML half-bottle) 2013 (Organic)
Type: Red, Dry
Vineyard: Frogs Leap Winery (California)

Buy local or find it at

A very nice deep and dark, almost a red plum color.  The scent was refreshing and smacked of wildflowers, smoke and a general earthiness that I loved.  I am all about organic wines and this one has definitely earned a place at my table.
