Wine: 2008 Catedral Reserva
Type: Red
Vineyard: Caves Velhas

Buy local

As you get into tasting the different varietals you’ll start noticing A LOT of grapes out there, especially when you venture to other regions in the world. This wine is 50% Tinta Roriz, 30% Alrochero, 20% Touriga-Nacional (the last one I’ve seen before). I gave it a Quini rating of 51/100 BUT I ended up tasting this a day or two later and it was really good! Would the rating have changed? I am not sure but this wine is definitely not a throwaway. I think that as we taste wines from the Old World there’s going to be a distinctive style that we’ll come to know quickly.

Wine: 2009 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Type: Red, Dry
Vineyard: Silver Oak Alexander Valley Winery

Buy local or find it at Wine.com

My “ah ha!” wine….great wine should be smooth but layered, complex and lingering, at least for my palate. Let it breathe for a couple of hours to reveal the smoothness and VERY long finish layer after layer.

Wine: Mulderbosch Faithful Hound 2010
Type: Red, Dry
Vineyard: Mulderbosch Winery, South Africa

Another Bordeaux blend out of South Africa.  A delight on the nose with plenty of rich fruity aromas of plums and a hint of Anise and pepper.  Beautiful color and great finish.

Wine: Schmitt Sohne Relax Riesling 2012
Type: White, Off-dry
Vineyard: Schmitt Söhne Wines, Germany

Buy local or find it at Wine.com

Not too sweet, not too dry, this German Riesling is well-balanced and perfect to sip on its own or enjoy with a salad and cheese/fruit plate. Definitely fruity with a hint of apple. Many say peaches and citrus, but well – all I picked up was the apple aroma. Very nice wine.
